why is my business not showing up on Google Maps

Why your business isn't showing up on Google Maps

Updated 2026-08-24 · 5 min read
The short answer

A business usually misses the Google Maps pack for one of seven reasons: the Google Business Profile is unverified or suspended, the primary category is wrong, the address or service area is set incorrectly, the name, address and phone do not match across the web, the business has too few recent reviews relative to competitors, the website has no LocalBusiness schema tying it to the profile, or the searcher is simply too far away, since Maps results are heavily weighted by proximity. Check verification and category first, because those two account for most cases.

The seven causes, in the order to check them

Each one is quick to verify, and the first two solve most cases.

  1. 1Verification or suspension. Open your Google Business Profile and confirm it is verified and not suspended. A suspended profile disappears entirely and needs a reinstatement request, not more SEO work.
  2. 2Wrong primary category. The primary category carries enormous weight. A roofer listed under 'construction company' will lose to a roofer listed under 'roofing contractor' every time. Pick the most specific accurate category and add secondaries below it.
  3. 3Address and service-area setup. A storefront needs a verified address. A service-area business should hide the address and define the areas served. Getting this backwards suppresses visibility.
  4. 4Inconsistent NAP. Your name, address and phone must match exactly across your site, the profile and directories. A suite number here and not there is enough to create doubt.
  5. 5Review volume and recency. Competitors with a hundred recent reviews outrank you on prominence. Reviews from three years ago count for far less than reviews from last month.
  6. 6No LocalBusiness schema on the site. Structured data on your website confirms to Google that the site and the profile are the same entity. Without it you are asking Google to guess.
  7. 7Proximity. Maps results change with the searcher's location. Checking your own ranking from your office is misleading. Test from different points in your service area.

What actually moves the needle fastest

Fixing the primary category and getting a steady flow of recent reviews outperforms almost everything else for a local business. Both are free. Neither requires a developer.

What will not help

Buying reviews, keyword-stuffing the business name, or creating extra listings for the same location. All three risk a suspension that costs you more than the ranking was worth.

Frequently asked questions

How long until my profile changes take effect?

Category and detail edits often show within a few days. Review-driven prominence builds over weeks and months.

Can I rank in a city I do not have an address in?

It is possible with a service-area profile plus a genuine service-area page for that city, but proximity works against you. Expect it to take longer than your home city.

Does my website matter for Maps ranking?

Yes. Google uses the linked website to judge relevance and prominence, so structured data, city-specific service pages and page speed all feed into the map pack.
